There is an upsurge of pure talent and creativity on the music scene in Peterborough with the beginnings of Red Lions Music Promotions. So far we have seen a refreshingly different night of blues music and this week a Nirvana and Foo Fighters Recital which was sold out, with more events to come. You don’t have to be in the business to appreciate the musicianship and skill of everyone involved.
Set One – Foo Fighters
The recently opened Courtyard Room at the popular North Street Bar in Peterborough is fast becoming a central social hub. With strong lighting from either side of the raised stage, the effect was very dramatic, harking back to old rock and roll shows, alth0ugh occasionally posing a challenge to photograph as it could cast the musicians’ faces into shadow.
Now, these guys aren’t a tribute act, they’re just incredibly good. They’ve got the tone, the voices, and even some of the looks. But the night was all about playing the music that so many people love and take as inspiration for their own music.
The Foo Fighters set had an explosive finish, worthy of Grohl and his bandmates, which set the stage for Nirvana. There wasn’t long to wait which pleased the crowd which was pressed up against the stage.
Set Two – Nirvana
A new set and a new band (with the exception of Rob, the bassist). A fresh line up bringing with it some old tunes. They packed a whole 17 songs into their set making it a whirlwind from the 90s.
True to Nirvana’s live performances, the well known Smells Like Teen Spirit was broken off into new song. Jimmy even dyed his hair peroxide to channel Nirvana’s guitarist Pat Smear.
Such was the attention to detail that Dan (Kurt Cobain) even changed the way he played guitar to play chords in the same, unorthodox way that Kurt did so that the sound was a true to the 90s grunge as possible.
Both drummers, John and Pepper, were so expressive in their playing and their dynamic was very photogenic. Although the lighting may have been tough on people’s faces, it was ideal for when the symbols were smashed – the way they caught the light in what was otherwise a dark room created unusual pictures.
Thank you –
