I returned to Peterborough and to North Street Bar’s Courtyard Room to be the music photographer for the third Red Lions Music Promotions night. Once again it was busy with musicians and music lovers alike, who came together for the showcase of original music. The line-up was Sons of Kal-El, then Our Glorious Demonic Heist, and finally Fallen Breaks.
As a follow up to the recent Foo Fighters/Nirvana Live Recital it’s fantastic to have even more creativity coming back to the music scene in Peterborough, and to have the chance to photograph live music on my doorstep.
-Sons Of Kal-El-
First to take the stage was Sons of Kal-El. I thought the dark red lights behind the stage suited their sound; moody, guitar heavy and loud. The strong light and shadows makes for fantastic portrait photographs. Tim from the High Rollers stepped in on drums, and the 4 piece not only set the beat but the tone for the evening.
-Our Glorious Demonic Heist-
This was the first time I had seen Our Glorious Demonic Heist perform since seeing them at photographing the band at The Willow Festival in summer, and this time they were minus their bassist. Far from making less sound, I thought the dual guitars gave them a feel which reminded me of where rock and roll all started – music that was faster and more exciting than the music of days gone by.
Last on the line up, these guys came armed with a merchandise stand full of t-shirts, CDs and bracelets. With the audience buzzing from the last 2 bands it didn’t take long for the musicians to swap around and begin playing. There was plenty more head banging with Dave’s long hair and some charismatic playing from Rob and John to round off the night.
Black and white photography, particularly when the subject matter is music and bands, is especially striking when movement is encorporated – and trying to capture the perfect moment of a musician mid-play is and exciting challenge.
